Central Boulevard Students Celebrate Pi Day with Hands-On Math Challenge

On Mar. 14—better known as Pi Day—Central Boulevard students embraced their inner mathematicians in a fun and engaging celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi).

Led by math specialist Ms. Allison Robb, fifth graders participated in a hands-on lesson that put their measurement skills to the test. Working in pairs, students received a sheet with variously sized pies drawn on it. Using string, they carefully measured each pie’s circumference and then used rulers to determine its diameter. By dividing the circumference by the diameter, they calculated how close they could get to the famous number 3.14.

To add a competitive edge, Ms. Robb kept a running scoreboard, tracking which teams measured most accurately. The challenge wasn’t easy—measuring circles with string required patience and precision—but it reinforced a key mathematical principle: no matter the size of the circle, pi remains the same.

The activity not only deepened students' understanding of pi but also made learning math a memorable and exciting experience.
