On a beautiful fall day, kindergarten students at Kramer Lane Elementary enjoyed a unique, hands-on learning experience, courtesy of BOCES Outdoor Education. Held outdoors under a tent, the lesson invited each kindergarten class to explore the fascinating journey of apples from orchard to glass.
The event focused on introducing young learners to the life cycle of an apple. Students learned about how apples grow and the different varieties that come from orchards around the country. They got up close with a variety of apples, noticing their shapes, colors and textures and discovering what makes each type unique.
The highlight of the lesson was the apple press. Each student had the chance to take part in the cider-making process by crushing the apples in the press, working together to squeeze out every last drop of juice. With every crank of the press, the students saw firsthand how apples are transformed into the delicious cider they love.
After all the hard work, students were rewarded with a taste of fresh apple cider from the local Jericho Cider Mill. The experience delighted the young learners and brought the science of apple-growing to life in a memorable way.
