At JFK Middle School, Mondays are more than just the start of a new week—they’re an opportunity to set a positive tone and foster meaningful connections through the Mondays Matter initiative. Spearheaded by Principal Erin Hayes and Assistant Principal Anthony Murray, the program welcomes students into the building each Monday morning with music and incorporates engaging incentives, inspiring messages, and interactive activities during homeroom.
This week, the theme of courage took center stage as students were greeted with cards featuring individuals or characters who exemplify bravery. Courage is the character trait being highlighted throughout January, and the activity encouraged students to reflect on the concept and engage in meaningful discussions in their homeroom classes.
Adding a layer of excitement to the morning, some students received special cards featuring President John F. Kennedy, their school’s namesake. These lucky recipients earned 500 points for their homerooms, igniting a friendly competition among classes. Homeroom teachers tallied the number of points earned by the JFK cards and shared the results with Ms. Hayes or Mr. Murray. The stakes are high: the homeroom with the most points at the end of the semester will enjoy either a bagel breakfast or a pizza party.
The focus on character education doesn’t stop there. This Wednesday, students will have another chance to engage with the month’s theme during a special lunchtime activity designed to deepen their understanding of courage.
Through initiatives like Mondays Matter, JFK Middle School is building a culture where students feel inspired and supported as they start each new week.
